With an agency name like Pineapple Escapes, there is no doubt that we love Hawaii! My family visits the islands as often as we can and enjoyed a trip to Oahu over spring break. This was our third trip to Oahu with kids and we are still finding more and more experiences that we love!
Number 5 – Dole Plantation
As a true pineapple lover, the Dole Plantation makes my list for one of the top 5 spots in Oahu. There is nothing quite like seeing the fields of pineapples and eating Dole Whip in Hawaii! I also love the store with random pineapple souvenirs! On this trip, we tried the Pineapple Split – and it was amazing! This delicacy is half of a pineapple with mountains of pineapple Dole Whip, topped with pineapple, strawberry, and chocolate topping, with a cherry on top! It took 5 of us to eat it – one being a teenage boy – but we did it!
Number 4 – Diamond Head
Diamond Head is an extinct volcano on Oahu. It is an iconic symbol of the island, and I can’t think of Waikiki Beach without picturing Diamond Head in the distance. The hike is a steep one with some uneven terrain, several steps, and a tunnel. It starts from the middle of the volcanic crater and climbs 500 feet to the top of the rim with beautiful panoramic views. Even though I’m an avid Pelotoner (I’m #Rides4DoleWhip for fellow riders), the hike showcased that I may need to branch out a bit more! It’s definitely a hike that is worth doing! After our hike, we stopped at the Honolulu Pineapple Co. truck for pineapple smoothies, which were delicious!
Number 3 – North Shore
It isn’t a visit to Oahu if you don’t visit the North Shore. The waves – especially in the winter – are a sight to see. We always enjoy watching the surfers and marveling at their skills! We always spend at least a day visiting the North Shore – usually combining a trip to Waimea Falls, time at the beach to watch the surfers, and a stop at the iconic shrimp truck – Giovanni’s – for garlic shrimp. So good!!
Number 2 – Ko’Olina
As a Disney Destination lover, I’m a huge fan of Disney’s Aulani located on one of the 4 lagoons in Ko’Olina! This is truly one of my favorite destinations! However, even if you’re not staying at Aulani, there is public parking and you can spend the day on one of the lagoons. The lagoons are beautiful, have a great walking path, and are great for little ones as they don’t have waves to worry about! Ko’Olina means joy and this area is relaxing and beautiful! The photo above was taken as we were landing – I love how it showcases the 4 lagoons!
Number 1 – Pounder’s Beach
My family’s favorite beach is one that isn’t super busy. We spent a full day here on our April trip and while a few people appeared throughout the day, we mostly had the beach to ourselves. This beach is located right down the road from the Polynesian Cultural Center. We love this beach because it is gorgeous – the landscape is so beautiful – but also because of the waves. The waves aren’t quite to the level of a full North Shore beach, but are perfect for boogie boarding – which my trio loves!
Those are my top 5 favorite spots on Oahu! I am sure I could easily do a Top 20 (or maybe even 50!), but this hits a few of my favorite highlights! If a trip to Oahu or any of the Hawaiian islands is your future, we’d love to help make it magical.
