Savannah, Georgia

Spanish moss-covered live oaks line the streets in this beautiful southern coastal city. Read about five of the most popular activities to do in historic Savannah, Georgia.

One of my favorite Georgia cities has to be Savannah. I’m sure you’ll recognize the Spanish moss-covered trees and fountain of Forsyth Park — one of historic Savannah’s many parks — from magazines or movies and I am here to tel you, it really is that beautiful in person. I could write a book about all the things I love about Savannah but for now, check out five of my most favorite things to do in this spectacular city.

River Street

Probably the most popular destination in Savannah is River Street. The riverfront has always played an important role in Georgia, whether as a colonial port, exporter of cotton, or tourist destination. This centuries-old cobblestoned-lined street is now home to many restaurants, shops, and hotels. Even if you don’t have a specific destination in mind, take the time to leisurely walk River Street — watch cargo ships coming in and out of the harbor and take in the beauty of this historic city. For dinner, I would definitely suggest Vic’s on the River for their delicious southern-style seafood options. And for dessert, you have to go to Savannah’s Candy Kitchen for their melt-in-your-mouth pralines. I have to stop by this candy shop every single time I visit Savannah — it is a MUST and you should too.

Historic Savannah Trolley Tours

An incredible way to see many of Savannah’s most popular historic sites is to take one of the many options for hop-on/hop-off trolley tours. This is an excellent way to see this beautiful city as well as learn about it all at the same time. What I love about the trolley tours is that they are family-friendly (plenty of room for strollers) and is a nice way to see the sites of Savannah without having to drive around yourself.

Riverboat Cruises

Another popular activity is the riverboat cruises, which offer a variety of options including brunch, lunch, or dinner cruises, sunset cruises, and even sightseeing cruises. You’ll want to take advantage of the many great photo opportunities of River Street and of the Savannah skyline while on one of these riverboat cruises.

Haunted Ghost Tours

So, I’m not sure if you have heard or not but Savannah, Georgia is famously haunted. The city was literally built on the dead —buildings, homes, and roads sit atop Native American burial grounds and the forgotten cemeteries of slaves and colonialists. Through the years, bloody battles, devastating fires, yellow-fever epidemics, and hurricanes have taken thousands of lives — leaving behind their unsettled spirits. If you are anything like me and love all things SPOOKY, you have to try a haunted ghost tour. These tours take you all around Savannah’s historic district where guides will reveal each haunted site’s history and share stories of the many ghost sightings seen there. There a numerous tour options that you can choose from including family friendly, adult only, and even bar crawls. Pro Tip — most, if not all, of these tours are walking tours so make sure to wear comfortable shoes.

Tybee Island

Located just 20 minutes from downtown Savannah is Tybee Island. This quaint barrier island is home to over three miles of beautiful beaches. In addition to beaches, make sure you check out the Tybee Light Station and Museum — situated on the site of the first light to aid navigation constructed on the Southern Atlantic coast. Here you’ll enjoy sweeping, panoramic views of the Georgia coastline and if you’re lucky, you may spot a pod of bottlenose dolphins. If you love wildlife, the Tybee Island Marine Science Center is home to a loggerhead sea turtle named, Admiral. The center offers marine education and programs and is an excellent way to see and learn all about the area’s wildlife. And probably my favorite part about visiting Tybee Island — the food. Tybee is known for its coastal fare, like wild Georgia shrimp and oysters. You cannot go wrong with visiting The Crab Shack or check out one of the many different options Tybee has to offer.
