Maui is a beautiful island in Hawaii located in the Pacific Ocean. There are actually 137 islands or inlets that makeup Hawaii; however, there are seven major islands. The seven major islands are Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Hawaii (the Big Island), Lanai, Molokai, and Kahoolawe. Maui is the second-largest island with numerous gorgeous beaches.
Maui’s National Park called Haleakala, has the highest peak on the entire island. It is 10,000 feet above sea level. This volcano/crater is very popular to tour. It contains many twists and turns as you drive up to the top! When you reach the top, the views are spectacular! Many tourists opt to ride bikes down Mount Haleakala during sunrise. It definitely is an amazing experience.
Road to Hana is another popular attraction in Maui. This is definitely an all-day tour. While taking this tour, whether you drive yourself, or book an excursion with a guide, you will see many fascinating waterfalls and beaches. You will see 15 waterfalls, 59 bridges, 620 curves, and so much more during this 60-mile tour which takes 10-12 hours. My favorite is the Black Sand Beach! Seven Sacred Pools and Twin Falls are popular stops along the way. It was fascinating to see where Weird Al Yankovic lives on the Road to Hana as well as seeing the zebra-striped bamboo and rainbow bark trees called Rainbow Eucalyptus.
Hyatt Regency Resort and Spa is a great resort option in Maui. We stayed here and were able to feed the penguins and fish in the Koi pond. We also participated in activities like how to make leis and hula dancing. At night, you can go on top of the roof and do a star-gazing program with a guide! Finally, we attended the luau on property, which was amazing! The resort has a few pools and waterslides and a little cave you can go into to order drinks and food. That was one of our favorite hangouts with the kids because the pool is in the cave as well. We also enjoyed the Hawaiian shaved ice with ice cream in the bottom – best we ever had!
Sheraton Maui Resort and Spa is also another great resort option. This resort has the famous cliff diving ceremony each night called Lele Kawa… a guy will run through the resort lighting all of the torches and blowing the shell horn and finally climbs up the cliff, throws in his bead necklace, and jumps off the high cliff. This resort also offers a few pools, a slide, and a little lazy river lagoon area.
Whalers Village is located between these two resorts on Kaanapali Beach. This is a great shopping center and food court. There is a free trolley from all of the resorts near this Village, and from here, you can also take the bus to downtown Lahaina for $2 each way (price is subject to change).
Downtown shopping is a lot of fun and where you will see a lot of surfers riding the waves. You will also see the famous banyan tree located in the middle of downtown. This is where we ate the locals’ popular food at their home-cooked restaurants and did a lot of souvenir shopping since the prices were better than at our resort.
