Why I Travel

I read a quote today that said, “the best holiday gifts can’t be opened, they are experienced.”  We talk a lot about gifting travel (I highly recommend listening to our recent podcast Jamie, Celina, and I recorded about the importance of gifting travel and gift ideas).  But why should we travel?

As an agency, we have been discussing our “why?”  Why do we do what we do?  Why do we travel?

There are many reasons to travel.  Some people travel to relax.  Some people travel to see new things.  Some travel to celebrate a holiday, birthday, or milestone.  There are many reasons why someone might travel.  All of these are good reasons.

My favorite reason to travel… to make memories with the people that are important to me.  We travel a lot for celebrations; that is my favorite EXCUSE to travel.  But that’s exactly what it is.  An excuse.  I love to travel.  I love to experience new things and new places.  And I love doing so for a birthday, holiday, anniversary, or graduation present.  You got accepted to college? Let’s go on a trip!  Let’s celebrate you and your accomplishment, experience something new… AND… make lifelong memories together.  Life is short.  Unfortunately, the past (almost) two years has reminded so many of us that.  It is important to have memories and experiences together with your loved ones.

I have no idea what my husband bought me for our five-year anniversary (or for any other anniversary if I’m being honest).  What do I remember about our five-year anniversary?  Scooting down Coba Ruins in Mexico on my butt because my legs were shaking so bad that I couldn’t walk down it.

For our ten-year anniversary, I actually do remember the necklace he bought me that year.  I remember it because he bought it for me while walking around exploring Paris!  I remember the Christmas lights, the cold rain, the Christmas market, getting our picture made with Santa Claus, and that my knee was swollen from walking 13 miles that day.

Remember when we saw the grizzly bear in Grand Tetons National Park?  My husband bought me a little wood bear in Jackson Hole to remember that moment.  Honestly, I can still remember the way I was holding my breath but didn’t want to walk away without looking at the wood bear on my dresser. Or the first time we saw a moose in Colorado but didn’t get a picture because I left the camera battery in the car.  If I look like I have it all together, then I am doing a good job of faking it.  Because I promise you, I don’t.

Remember the time we went skiing in Colorado for Matthew’s birthday?  Andrew left us on the mountain and went down BY HIMSELF.  Why?  Because I WAS EMBARRASSING HIM.  Apparently, I skied too slow for a six-year-old.  Have you ever embarrassed a six-year-old?  It’s almost as humiliating as my skiing!

I still remember my first trip to the ocean.  I was 14, and we went to Panama City Beach, Florida, for my brother’s high school graduation.  The van broke down while we were there.  The hotel was disgusting (the internet wasn’t a thing, and my mom didn’t use a travel agent).  We went on a dolphin tour and it stormed, and we barely made it back to shore.  We never did see a dolphin.   Honestly, I don’t even remember the beach.  But I remember the vacation with my family.  The trip was everything but perfect.  But we created lifelong memories (some bad, some good) with each other.

Some of my favorite moments with my family happened while on vacation together.  They are memories that my children will have forever.  That is why I travel with them – so they will remember what they saw, who they were with, and how it made them feel.

My family’s favorite travel memories:

Andrew

“Seeing all of the rescued animals at the Wildlife Conservation Center and the Sealife Center in Alaska and howling with the wolves at the Wolf Sanctuary in Colorado.”

Matthew

“Going to the Little League World Series and sledding down the hill.”

Ben

“Seeing the Braves win game 4 of the World Series”

Emily

“Seeing the Breckenridge Troll in Colorado”

Samantha

“Favorite family memory – Hanging by the pool of the beach house in Rodanthe – music playing, and the kids dancing and having fun jumping in and out of the pool.

My next favorite travel memories are our Christmas travels.  I love Christmas time and Christmas lights.  Christmas in NYC and Paris are breathtaking.  I also love Christmas season at Universal Orlando.  The Grinch is my favorite!”

Donald

“Do I have to pick just one?  Making pottery in a home in the Mayan Village in Mexico; Montmartre, Paris – the cobblestone streets, the views, and the Sacre-Coeur; hiking to the little Grand Canyon at Yellowstone; and fishing in Alaska.”

Spending time together, making new memories, and traveling are important to my family.  That is why I travel.  That is why I do what I do.  I want to help others travel, to gain new experiences and to make new memories.
