What To Pack For An
International River Cruise

Having recently completed an AmaWaterways Rhine River cruise, I wanted to share tips for packing all the essentials.  As a frequent traveler, there is nothing like a list to make sure you have what you need to enjoy your trip, no matter where you are going.  Many years ago, my husband and I took a Caribbean cruise where I forgot to pack him any shoes except his brown oxfords he was wearing.  He could be found around the ship in his oxfords and socks, even in his swimsuit.  I have to say, I was probably more embarrassed about this than he was!

To keep this type of disaster from happening again, I utilize the notes section on my phone to create lists for different vacation types.  While some things are consistent no matter where you go, each list is personalized for different destination types and is always close at hand if you think of something you need to add.  I use the feature that allows you to check off items and moves them to the bottom of the list.  Next trip, clear the check marks and you are ready to start again.

Here are the items I added for the European river cruise that are unique:

  • Flat iron made for European outlets – Even with an adapter, hair appliances with a standard US plug do not work well.
  • Travel belt – Depending on where you are traveling in Europe, some places are known for having pick-pockets so this is a great way to keep your money, ID, and cards safe.
  • European adapters – These are for all the things besides your hair appliances that need plugged in such as phone chargers, CPAP machines, electronics, etc.
  • Extension cord – There are very few outlets in the cabin so an extension cord was needed to keep something plugged in by the bed.
  • Clothing that layers well – When I traveled in late December and January, I was able to enjoy beautiful 50 plus degree weather, while agent Jamie who went 2 weeks before me had extremely cold temperatures. Just like my home in the Midwest, weather is hard to predict, so make sure you are prepared for warm or cold.
  • Travel pillow – I don’t usually take my travel pillow, but this is a long flight!
  • Passport and travel documents – While all international flights require a passport, different countries have specific requirements for required documents. Many provide a QR code to screen shot on your phone, but I recommend a hard and digital copy.

Hopefully, I have inspired you to work on your destination type packing lists.  It certainly has made packing easier for me!
