6 Types of Butterbeer
at Universal Orlando Resort

One of my favorite snacks at Universal Orlando is Butterbeer.  Butterbeer is a popular drink consumed in the Harry Potter series, making it a perfect addition to Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It’s hard to describe the flavor, other than butterscotch mixed with?? The recipe is super-secret, and therefore nobody really knows what makes it so amazing! There are six varieties of Butterbeer at Universal, three drinks and three snacks.

Drinks

There are three different forms of the popular Butterbeer drink: 

Cold – The original is a cold drink similar to cider 

Frozen – The same flavor as the cold but in slush form

Hot – Butterbeer flavor with the consistency of hot chocolate

All three drinks are served with an amazing, whipped topping that is as good as the Butterbeer itself.  All three can be found in both Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade. 

There is a popular debate as to which one is the best.  My favorite was the frozen until  I had the hot.  This is still a very close second for me so I highly recommend trying it.  Just be prepared for the brain freeze because I PROMISE it’s coming!  The hot has become so popular that what was once a seasonal treat is now offered all year long.  Ideally, I can enjoy both the hot and frozen during each trip.  My son actually enjoyed them both at the same time during our last visit.

Snacks

There are three forms of snacks that you can enjoy in Butterbeer flavor:

Fudge – two layers of the butterscotch and sweet combination

Ice Cream – Vanilla and Butterbeer flavor swirl, served in a cone or a dish

Potted Cream – similar to the consistency of pudding, served in a small mason jar

All three snacks can be found in Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade. 

Which type of Butterbeer is the most popular is a common debate. To research what is the top choice of Butterbeer, I polled the Universal Orlando experts – the annual pass holder group on Facebook. 

456 people participated in the poll asking them to choose (one) favorite Butterbeer option.

The results are clear that most people prefer the hot or frozen drink over the other Butterbeer options.  The fudge is a good option if you want to bring a treat home for others (or for a snack on your way home).  Don’t wait too long to eat it though or it won’t be fresh.

If I was to rank my favorites, my top three are hot, frozen, and the ice cream.  One of these days I’m going to put my ice cream in the cold and try a Butterbeer float! Side note, the best place to enjoy a hot or frozen Butterbeer drink or the ice cream is on the steps next to the Gringotts bank in Diagon Alley.  The fire breathing dragon just tops off the experience!

Butterbeer is one of my favorite treats at Universal, and I make sure to have at least one on each trip… or one each day of my trip…
