When booking your next European vacation, why not go somewhere hot, exotic, and full of culture off the beaten path? How about Malta?
Where is Malta you ask? What is Malta you wonder? Look no further as I’ve got all that you need to know! Malta is a country comprised of 5 islands, three inhabitable and two that were used for target practice during WW2, which remain undeveloped. This archipelago is known for its tourism. A beautiful Catholic country that is rich in history, has stunning beaches, and a population of a little over 525,000, Malta gained its independence from England not so long ago in 1964.
Malta has a very dry climate with very little rain in the summer, if at all. Two of Malta’s islands are accessible predominantly by ferry or helicopter, those being Malta and Gozo. Comino is traveled to by small charter, water taxis, or speed boats. Malta, being the most metropolitan of the islands, is home to the capital, Valetta. In Malta, you can tour historical sites such as Mdina and the Mosta Dome Church where this unsupported dome was the site of a WW2 bomb that shattered through the roof of the church but did not detonate upon its crash. Talk about a miracle!
Valetta is a beautiful shopping area, where gelato and restaurants are a plenty. There are walking tours, sailing charters, and the harbour is quite picturesque. St. Julian’s is full of nightlife and restaurants were most dine al fresco. Wied Iż-Zurrieq is home of the largest shark caught to date, as well as the Blue Grotto and its beautiful caves you can explore via boat.
The island of Comino, known for The Blue Lagoon which both tourists and locals flock to, is a definite choice for a beach day of snorkeling, sunbathing, and swimming. There are other areas of Comino to be explored as well, but The Blue Lagoon is always number one on a traveler’s itinerary.
The island of Gozo is quaint and more countryside compared to her sisters, Malta and Comino. Gozo is a more laidback island, but don’t be fooled, she too is home to many tourist musts as well! The feast days of Saint Peter and Saint Paul at the end of June are not to be missed. Locals pay homage to the saints in a daily schedule of events with fireworks, procession, mid-day march, and so much more! The beaches rival that of Malta: Ramla, Hondoq, Dahlet Qorrot to name a few are some of the best places for swimming, diving, and fishing!
Dinner at Xlendi, Mgarr, or Xlendi is always a popular choice; the views of the water as you dine at sunset are most Instagram worthy. You’ll without a doubt want to visit churches for their breathtaking décor, if not for the history within them. Ta’ Pinu Church is full of miracle stories that Madonna Ta’ Pinu is responsible for. The walls are full of crutches, relics, and stories of the miracles experienced. It is truly a holy and spiritual place to visit.
Malta is a Mediterranean mecca full of wondrous sites, beaches, and culture to be experienced. Malta’s a must for any traveler’s bucket list!
