Preparing for a Road Trip

For many travelers, nothing beats a good old-fashioned road trip! You know you will be rewarded with amazing scenic views, you have the flexibility to stop wherever and whenever you want, you can set your own schedule, it is usually more cost-effective than flying, and you get to pack as many bags as your heart desires. As with any trip, preparation is the key to a smooth and enjoyable experience. Whether you are preparing for your first time, or are a seasoned veteran, this road trip preparation guide I have created is sure to benefit you when you set out on the open road!

Planning Your Road Trip

The destination and time of year you are wanting to go on your road trip are huge factors to think about when you are trying to decide how far ahead you should begin planning. If you are wanting to travel during the peak summer season or one of the holiday seasons, you will want to make sure to reach out to your favorite Pineapple Escapes’ agent well in advance. Your agent can assist you with booking the lodging accommodations along your route, your rental vehicle if you decide you need one, and any activities you plan on experiencing when you arrive!

Renting vs. Driving Your Own Vehicle

When you decide to go on a road trip, you will need to determine whether your personal vehicle is the best option for the road trip and the destination itself, or if you should rent a vehicle that would be more capable. For example, if you are headed to the mountains, you may need a four-wheel drive or a vehicle that sits up higher. If you are going to the beach, you may decide that a convertible would be more fun. You also need to consider the age of your personal vehicle, its reliability, and whether it needs any repairs. If you decide that it would be best to rent a vehicle, your agent can help you book the perfect one! If you decide to drive your own vehicle, make sure that it is up to date on its maintenance to reduce the risk of a breakdown or accident. Set up an appointment with a reliable mechanic to check your tire pressure, brakes, battery, engine, wiper blades, and top off engine oil and fluids if necessary!

What You Should Pack

It can be tempting to overpack when you are only limited by the amount of space your vehicle has, but try your best to pack only what is most practical! First, AAA recommends that you have an emergency kit in your vehicle containing a cell phone and car charger, a first-aid kit, warm blanket, water and snacks, a flashlight, wet wipes, a basic tool set, an ice scraper, jumper cables, a tarp, a raincoat, gloves, and a paper map or printed directions. Second, you will need to pack your clothing, toiletries, medications, electronic devices, and chargers. Don’t forget to pack any necessary items and equipment for activities you have planned, like swimsuits, beach and pool gear, tennis rackets, or kayaks. Traveling with small children? Make sure to bring some of their favorite books, toys, and stuffed animals to keep them entertained and occupied during the long drive. You should also plan to stop more frequently and bring extra food and clothes for the little ones!

My Road Trip Tips

  1. Bring your own snacks! You simply can’t head out on a road trip without an unlimited supply of snacks. Buying food and drinks at rest stops can get expensive real quick. I would suggest stocking up on all your favorite snacks at your local grocery store before you set out on your road trip. Consider packing a cooler to keep everything cold and fresh!
  2. Download helpful apps! Apps can help a ton with finding the cheapest gas, the cheapest routes, the fastest routes, and even the closest public restroom to your location! I use the GasBuddy app to find the cheapest gas prices near me, and it has saved me a ton of money on my road trips.
  3. Increase your fuel efficiency! There are many ways to do this other than just saving money at the gas pump. Avoid putting luggage on the roof of your vehicle. This makes the vehicle less aerodynamic, therefore draining your tank faster. Try your best to drive below the speed limit, set your cruise control, and keep your tires properly inflated! You would be amazing at how much of a difference this can make!
  4. Be flexible! It is inevitable that you will run into a snag when you are on your road trip. You simply can’t predict stopped traffic due to a car accident, one of your children getting sick, or your vehicle breaking down. Allow some extra time in your schedule in case you run into an unforeseen situation!

That’s a Wrap!

Road trips are by far my favorite way to travel! I can honestly say that my favorite travel memories have been from going on road trips with family and friends. There is always an undeniable sense of excitement when climbing into a vehicle and hitting the open road! If you are wanting to plan a road trip, the first thing you should do is reach out to your favorite Pineapple Escapes’ agent. They will be able to help you plan your trip from beginning to end. Then, use this guide as an additional resource as you set out on the adventure of a lifetime! Happy “road trippin!”
