Good food is not difficult to find at Universal Orlando Islands of Adventure Resort. At almost every turn, there is a restaurant or eatery that can satisfy any appetite. The real question is what kind of food, and what kind of atmosphere you desire. That brings us to one of the coolest places to eat at either of the Universal Parks in Orlando: Mythos Restaurant. Perhaps no other dining experience can match the combination of atmosphere and food quality that can be found at Mythos.
Located in Islands of Adventure’s Lost Continent, Mythos is surrounded by an air of mystery. The Lost Continent itself is themed around the concept of an ancient Mediterranean civilization that has been lost to history. The land is full of Greek Gods, middle eastern bazaars, and the sights and sounds of a bustling classical age marketplace. It is easy to believe while ensconced in this land of adventure and mystery, that one has accidentally wandered into a portal and been transported to pre-cataclysm Atlantis. Mythos Restaurant is unmistakable – its limestone cliffs, replete with intriguing engravings, jutting into the air above the continent. The dining room is only accessible through a cave-like corridor, and once inside diners are met with a scene that feels like it could have been ripped straight out of a Percy Jackson novel. One almost expects to have a chance meeting with Persephone or Poseidon as they are seated amongst the ancient Mediterranean decor. The atmosphere of Mythos adds a subtle sense of wonder and fun to the dining experience that is unmatched among its competitors within the Park.
Atmosphere and experience are a great way to set apart a meal, but all is for naught if the food is not up to par; happily, this is not an issue for the chefs at Mythos. The appetizers at Mythos are noticeably themed to match the Mediterranean decor, and feature foods found throughout that region of the world. I heartily recommend the semolina encrusted calamari. My family, you might say, are connoisseurs of good squid, and we agreed that this was some of the best we ever had, even going so far as to order a second helping after we demolished the first in just minutes. The main dishes do contain some of the same expected flavors, but also bring in some other, more interesting choices, like Phad Thai. The braised beef medallions were fall-apart tender and paired with a red-wine reduction were the stuff of culinary dreams. I would be remiss if I did not also mention the yummy desserts and intriguing drinks available at Mythos, both are well worth a few extra dollars.
Overall, my own experience with Mythos was fantastic, and I intend to make a visit each time I find myself in Islands of Adventure. It is worth noting that the service at the restaurant was top-notch, which is to be expected wherever you dine in a Universal Park. The wait staff were very friendly and also helpful in navigating the menu, especially for our more particular family members. I recommend a visit to Mythos for anyone spending a day at Universal. Oh, and say hello to Poseidon for me if you happen to see him!
