How to plan a vacation at least once a year: Tips and Tricks!

Before I became a travel agent, I would tell my husband, “Let’s go on a vacation this coming school break!” His response was always one of hesitation, “We will see, depends on our finances.” That response was not one I wanted to hear. After all, our vacations are things that this full-time working mama looks forward to every couple of months! Big or small, I want to do them all! I promised him, our kids, and myself that we would vacation at least once a year. My planning has saved us repeatedly. You too can do the same! Here are some tips and tricks to put you on the right path…

1. Think about when it’s more financially sound to travel:

If you want a tropical location, like the Caribbean, then consider the months during what is known as “hurricane season” when rates can be found to be lower than what is considered, “high season”. If you also want to avoid crowds for instance when traveling to Disney, August is considered a time when Floridian students go back to school, and crowds can be at their lowest. Timing is in fact everything.

2. Take into consideration who is traveling:

Are you budgeting for yourself, you and one other person, a group, or a family? When booking your trip, your travel agent can give you an idea of what the financial expectations are. Kids are often free with certain promotions like, “Royal Caribbean’s Kids Sail Free!” These can be money saving bonuses for your wallet!

3. Plan a year ahead of time, at leas:

Make payments monthly, after securing your vacation with a deposit. If you put your payment monthly on a credit card that racks up miles, you’re helping yourself for the next travel date! Then, be sure to pay off that monthly payment so you don’t incur interest. Giving yourself a timeline to pay everything off in a timely fashion makes everything more manageable and likely you will plan another vacation in the future right after you come back from the one already booked!

4. Budget:

If this isn’t the most important part, I don’t know what is. Maybe Maui isn’t a good idea if your child is about to enter college, plan that trip for his or her graduation. Perhaps an all-all inclusive in Jamaica for four would be more feasible in anticipation of those college tuition bills.
