Juneau was my favorite port on our Alaskan cruise! It might have a little to do with the crepe that I ate but more on that later ☺
There are many options for excursions in Juneau. Unfortunately, you will have to decide between the options and won’t be able to do everything that you want to. The good news is, that leaves you another reason to go back!
Mendenhall Glacier
One of the most popular excursions in Juneau is visiting Mendenhall Glacier. There are multiple excursion options to visit the glacier. You can visit on land via a tour bus or taxi. The tour busses are often combined with other excursions such as a whale watching tour or other activity and only spend about an hour at the glacier. There are also water-based tours where you can visit the glacier on a kayak or a raft.
If you prefer to spend more than an hour at the glacier to take advantage of the many hikes, you should consider visiting independently of a tour. You can get a taxi in town to take you to the glacier, but I recommend you pre-arrange a pick up time with your driver. The cell phone service at the glacier is unreliable and you don’t want to miss your boarding time on the ship because you couldn’t call out to get a taxi back to town. Another option to get to the glacier is to rent a car. We opted to rent a car for the day so we could spend as much time at the glacier as we wanted and not worry about getting a ride back to town. If you do have the time to spend at Mendenhall Glacier, make sure to enjoy the easy hike to Nugget Falls!
Downtown Juneau
After we left Mendenhall Glacier, we drove back to town and walked around the shops. We couldn’t agree on a place to eat so we ended up at an outdoor courtyard with tents and tables and local food trucks. When I tell you, this was the best decision we made, I mean, you should definitely check it out! We ate halibut tacos, halibut cakes, and salmon tots from Deckhand Dave’s and everything we had was amazing!
Right next to Deckhand Dave’s is Alaskan Crepe Escape and Andrew and I shared a cinnamon roll crepe. I am on a mission to find the best crepe in the United States, and so far, this one was my favorite! (I think Andrew agrees!) As a bonus, the only thing that makes eating fish tacos and crepes better, is eating with an amazing view!
Whale Watching
If you’ve ever wanted the opportunity to spot whales in the wild, whale watching tours are a very popular excursion in Juneau. It is common to spot humpback whales, gray whales, and orcas.
Since we chose to spend more time at Mendenhall Glacier, we didn’t get to take a whale watching tour. But that is on the top of my must-do list when we go back!
Juneau is home to lots more excursion options that include wildlife tours, helicopter and flightseeing tours, and riding the Goldbelt Tramway up Mount Roberts. You can spend time on an excursion or walk around downtown and enjoy the shops (and fish tacos and crepes). No matter how you decide to spend your day in Juneau, I’m sure you will love your day in Juneau as much as I did!
