Why Spend Time At Our National Parks and Memorials

If you ask my children, ages 21 and 24, what their favorite traveling memories were from when they were younger, I would bet they would say our trips we spent going to national parks and memorials. With travel as it has been lately, now would be a perfect time to get in the car and drive away.

We had done all of the usuals by the time the kids were 7 and 9. Walt Disney World, Busch Gardens, Kings Island, Cedar Point, and beach trips. We decided it was time to explore so we’ve take three sensational trips of a life time with all four of us in a car together ! We didn’t have lots of technology then, mainly a video player for each kid and headphones. They were troopers!

We visited what I call the lower half of the West – the site of the Oklahoma City Bombing, the Painted Desert, Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon, and others I can’t even remember – and that was all in one trip! We could climb out of the car as we entered each state and take a pic by the state sign, we could stop at cliche places like Winslow, Arizona. We could have picnics in the parks at our leisure and most of all, drive at our leisure. Our second trip consisted of the top half of the west which included stops at the Badlands, Devil’s Tower, Sturgis, General Custer’s park, and Yellowstone. The list is unreal now when I look back on it. Our third trip was in the eastern part of the US in the area of Acadia National Park.

I loved our time in the car, and I especially enjoyed the freedom to stop when we wanted to do what we wanted. Now I’m not a camper so the Hampton Inn is my type of camping on a trip. I would go to the breakfast area early each morning just so my husband and kids could sleep in just a little bit more.

We are very lucky we had the time and patience to explore all the US has to offer. If I could do it all over again I would leave tomorrow!
