Christmas is a magical time of year. However, it is celebrated in many different ways all around the world. Based on the culture, climate, and country, there are many different celebrations and events to partake in. I wanted to highlight SOME of these awesome traditions and destinations in Germany and Austria.
Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Dresden, Leipzig, and Stuttgart are some of the many cities in Germany that have Christmas Markets. Salzburg, Vienna, Innsbruck, and Graz are just some of the spots in Austria. Not to mention, there are several small towns in the suburbs of these cities and in the countryside. These small towns offer quaint and unique Christmas Markets.
In the major cities, the Christmas Markets are often found near the city’s city hall. It is place where vendors gather to sell their goods and services to visitors. They offer food, Christmas decor, drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), and unique items to that country. In Germany, they are known for their handmade smokers and nutcrackers. In Austria, you can find unique food items such as homemade “pancakes,” custards, and pastries.
There are also different themes in these markets. In Munich, they have over a dozen Christmas Markets in the city. While the main market is by the city hall and sells mostly traditional items and goods, there others scattered throughout. The themes include: carnival, renaissance, nativity, food only, and ages 18+.
My favorites include Salzburg in Austria and Leipzig in Germany. The Salzburg markets had the best food and the most diverse selection of Christmas decor. Not only did they have traditional smokers and nutcrackers in a wide variety, but they sold many glass blown decorations, candles, and Santas. Many of the handmade smokers and nutcrackers are made directly in Leipzig. Not only is there a good selection, but it is also a friendly choice on your wallet. 🙂
Merry Christmas all, and I hope you get a chance to experience these special destinations during future Christmas seasons!
