Keeping a Routine While Traveling

One of my absolute favorite things about traveling is escaping the everyday cycle that comes with having a job and “adulting.” Travel allows me to step outside of my normal day-to-day and relax, unwind, and enjoy my time. However, oftentimes I fall out of the daily habits and routines I work so hard to keep. Upon returning from vacation, I am unmotivated to restart my routine. Here are a few ways to maintain your daily routines even while away on vacation.

1. If you are somewhere long-term, don’t eat out for every meal. This is especially helpful if you are staying in an extended stay or suite-style hotel. These hotels offer a kitchenette, typically with a fridge, microwave, stovetop, and even utensils and dishes. This is a great way to save money on food expenses and keep in the habit of home-cooked family meals. If you are heading to Disney, think about a villa-type room or go for one of the good neighbor hotels that offer more room options than just a small fridge.

2. Schedule downtime throughout the busy patches of your vacation. It’s easy to get caught up in the go, go, go mentality and forget to take time to yourself. Make sure to schedule out some time to catch up on emails, mindlessly scroll through social media, or lounge by the pool. Opt for a hotel that offers Wi-fi in the guest rooms and common areas or somewhere that offers a business center in the lobby.

3. Go to the gym. If you regularly use the gym, don’t forget to keep that routine going. You don’t necessarily need to go every day while on vacation, but keeping consistency with your exercise helps keep your endorphins up and your mind and body healthy.

4. Maintain a sleep schedule. Even though you are on vacation, it’s important to keep up with a schedule of going to bed and waking up. This can also help when planning out your days’ activities. Sleep is important, especially when you have full, jam-packed schedules each day.

5. Keep your hygiene routine a priority. It’s easy to skimp on a skincare routine and something as simple as brushing your teeth. But skipping out for multiple days in a row can make a big difference. I bring small travel-approved size bottles or my skincare essentials so that I can keep up with my morning and evening routine. I also ensure that I brush my teeth at least twice a day (if not more) since I usually end up eating more during vacation. Don’t forget the sunscreen – especially if you are heading somewhere sunny.

6. Do something for yourself. Going on vacation and being in a new environment can sometimes be difficult for your body and mind to adjust. The best way to relax is to spend time and do something for yourself. A personal favorite of mine is indulging in a signature spa service or treating myself to a really nice dinner.
