AmaWaterways Rhine River Cruise

Do you love cruising, yet dream of kings and castles, narrow streets with bikes, and cobblestone streets?  Are you over the typical cruise to a Caribbean destination, reggae music, and humidity that is miserable?  Then maybe a European river cruise is just what you need!

My husband Keith and I just returned from a Rhine River cruise aboard AmaWaterways Amaprima, and we can’t wait for our next river cruise adventure!  AmaWaterways is the cruise line Disney uses for their river cruises. It is a family friendly cruise line, emphasizing a healthy lifestyle with an onboard wellness coach, bike tours as an option in ports, and the independent use of bikes at each stop.  However, don’t let the wellness part fool you! While there are healthy options, you can also choose the rich, decadent, over-the-top food that cruising is known for.

I will admit that cruising takes more work than other vacation types right now.  Visiting multiple countries means multiple Covid requirements and entry procedures, but that is why a travel agent is more important than ever.  It is our job to help guide you through the process, making sure everything is in order for a smooth journey.

Our cruise started in Basel, Switzerland, where we enjoyed an overnight stay at a small boutique hotel that was absolutely lovely.  We loved our time exploring there, and completed several self-guided walking tours to see all we could before we set sail.

We enjoyed the views all along the way, stopping at different ports daily for excursions, which were included in our package and hosted by local guides.  Typically, we would have an organized tour in the morning and then time to explore the area on our own before boarding for our next destination.  With stops in Germany and France, some of our highlights were Strasbourg, visiting Christmas Markets, the small village that was the inspiration for Beauty and the Beast, and viewing the magnificent castles along the way as well as a tour of the Heidelberg Castle.

If you’re a foodie, you won’t be disappointed.  AmaWaterways provided a sit down dining experience 3 times a day, with an option for quick service in the lounge, and also afternoon tea and late night snacks.  You are also able to dine at the Chef’s Table one night for a special seven course experience.  Complimentary adult beverages were included each evening during cocktail hour as well as wine and beer with meals.  Did I mention coffee?  As a lover of coffee, I was happy to see it available 24 hours a day at no charge, including cappuccino and other “fancy” drinks.

Entertainment embraced the culture too, with local artists visiting the ship to provide evening entertainment.  While nothing like the high-tech theatrical productions of some ocean cruisers, it was nonetheless enjoyable.

Overall, while nothing like an ocean cruise, this port-intensive adventure is a must do.  If you are a seasoned river cruiser, or think this is something you might like to explore, let the agents of Pineapple Escape create the perfect cruise for you.
