Beating the Heat at Disney

There’s nothing like a summer trip to Disney, the excitement, the smell of Mainstreet USA, the sunshine, the HEAT!  Let’s face it, one of the major drawbacks to visiting Disney in the summer is the Florida heat and humidity.  In fact, I try to avoid that time of year, but sometimes it isn’t an option.  Family and work schedules can dictate when we are able to take vacation, leaving us few options.

Last summer I visited twice in the summer, and want to share some tips I found to be helpful:

  • Bring a battery-operated fan. There are lots of options, and I ordered several before deciding on more traditional fans that were on a cord and pointed up.  I tried the popular neck fans but decided that it might bother me being around my neck.  We discovered that a small rechargeable clamp on fan we had for my granddaughter’s stroller put out the most air, and we might have borrowed it from her at times!  Misting fans are also a great option.
  • Cooling neck towels are great. I’m not sure how they work, but they are magical.  I used the Frogg Togg brand years ago when my kids were in sports so that is what we bought for our trip.

  • Take advantage of inside shows and attractions to cool off, plus give your feet a rest. My favorite for this is It’s a Small World, cool and relaxing!
  • Keep hydrated! Make sure you drink plenty of water, and bring your own water bottles if you wish.  Cups of water are free at Disney food counters.
  • Take advantage of early morning and evening park visits. Cooling off in one of the beautiful Disney pools is a great idea if your schedule allows.

  • Wear light-colored, lightweight clothing. There is nothing worse than a pair of soggy jean shorts!  Moisture wicking fabrics are a plus.
  • Take frequent breaks, find a shaded spot, drink some water, and regroup.
  • Enjoy lunch in an air- conditioned restaurant. It does take some time but is many times needed to keep going.

  • Consider Genie Plus and Lightning Lane – standing in line only makes the heat worse. Plan a strategy to make the most of your time and avoid long lines.
  • And if all else fails, a Pineapple Dole Whip is a great way to cool off!
