Almost all airlines allow for one personal item; a bag that will fit under the seat in front of you. While some people don’t take advantage of this allowance, I always bring a personal item. Here is a list of 5 items I pack in my backpack every time I fly and why.
This one is pretty obvious. I always use electronic documents and boarding passes whenever I can, but will sometimes print my mom’s documents when she comes with me (evidence of us being from two drastically different generations). One time I thought my phone was plugged in all night to charge, but it actually hadn’t. Thankfully I had my chargers and power bank to juice up my phone so I still had all my documents and media for the trip. These FuelRods are a great option because they are rechargeable and can even swapped out at places like the Airport or Disney World.
Airplanes are LOUD so I typically carry a pair of earplugs with me and put them in after take-off (they also help me fall asleep if I’m in a noisy environment). You might have read this and thought – but how can I listen to music with earplugs in? I have Shokz bone conduction headphones with ear plugs that work together as noise- cancelling headphones. A high-end pair of noise-canceling headphones can also do the trick, depending on your preference. I wear these at work, running, working out, and pretty much everywhere because (when I don’t also have earplugs in) I can still hear what’s going on around me.
Flying can sometimes be unpredictable and you’re at the mercy of the weather and the airlines. If you’re flight has been delayed for a long period of time, you may want to have a change of clothes with you so you can refresh before you take off. I also bring a change of clothes with me, just in case my luggage is lost or delayed, so I’m not completely destitute.
I’m one of those people whose ears get all weird when flying and gum is by far what helps alleviate the pressure in my ears. My travel a days also tend to be long days – whether they are long, or just feel long – and after coffee, travel, and naps… you know where I’m going with this. Gum is the answer.
You can’t bring a full water bottle through TSA with you because of the 3-1-1 rule, but you can bring an empty water bottle and fill it up once you’re through security. This definitely beats paying $5 for a bottle at the airport! I also like having my own bottle or tumbler to refill on my trip throughout the week with water or something more festive.
Bonus
I always download a show, podcast, and/or some music for use offline. Yes, I know it’s 2023 and all airports and planes have Wi-Fi now, but it doesn’t always work and isn’t always the fastest.
