Finnegan’s Pub
at Universal Studios Florida

Perhaps it is because I spent some time living in Ireland as a child, or maybe it’s because my husband enjoys a good pint every now and then, but for some reason our family loves to eat in Irish Pubs. There is an ineffable aura of magic when the bartenders are pulling draughts, the music is playing, and the smell of corned-beef is wafting through the air that seems to bring people closer together and make family time fun. One of my favorite Irish eateries anywhere is Finnegan’s Bar and Grill in Universal Studios Florida. In fact, the last time we were visiting Universal Orlando Resort as a family we ate at Finnegan’s twice in the span of a week! I’d like to take a few moments and share a couple of reasons why this restaurant is worth a visit.

First, as is the case with any place that serves food, the quality of the meal ought to come first, and that is definitely true at Finnegan’s. The food at Finnegan’s has been top-notch every time I have visited. Traditional Irish dishes such as cottage pie and bangers and mash are cooked to perfection, each bite transporting the diner to a far away place with lush green pastures and pure running waters. The fish and chips may be simple, but the Finnegan’s chef makes even this dish sing its own tune. The menu boasts an impressive array of Irish favorites, but it also does a good job of mixing in some non-traditional fare like the Grand Ole Burger or the Celtic Chicken Club Salad. These dishes may not be obviously Irish, but they are obviously delicious. Your kids will have you begging to return after they have delighted in dishes off of the kids’ menu including the Finnegan’s Burger, Grilled Turkey Sandwich, Chicken Tenders, or our kids’ favorite, the Fruit Plate with “Ice Cream” (Shhh! Don’t tell them it’s actually fruit sorbet).

The second reason Finnegan’s is such a good choice for those visiting Universal Studios Orlando is the ambience. In order for an Irish eatery to really set the mood, it has to help its customers feel like they are actually visiting the emerald isle. Finnegan’s does this effectively in several ways. First, they take care of all the little things that can detract from the dining experience by ensuring their wait staff is friendly and properly trained. Additionally, the menu is full of Irish foods and even less obvious dishes that still boast traditional Irish sides like roasted root vegetables. The walls are decorated with various items that point the customer toward Ireland, and the building itself is built using colors and shades that make the experience come alive.

I feel like I need to take a moment and say a little something about the drink menu. Finnegan’s offers a plethora of spirits for its customers. The Irish theme extends even here with a large draft selection including Guinness, Harp, and Smithwick’s, Irish legacies all. The signature cocktails boast pretty cool Irish themes like “Ring of Kerry” and “Green Tea Clover.” So, even when ordering a drink one cannot forget the theme that is being played.

Ultimately, great food, excellent theme work and ambience, and an excellent drink menu catapult Finnegan’s onto our family list of favorite theme park restaurants! Its one of those destinations that we look forward to hitting long before we board the first flight.
