Have you ever been to Key West? It is the southernmost point in Florida and is only 90 miles north of Cuba. This destination is known for diving and snorkeling because of all the coral reefs. It is not known for its beaches. However, it is definitely an entertaining place with something always going on. Many historical landmarks are here as well.
While in Key West, you have to get your obligatory picture in front of the Southernmost point landmark. You may want to get the iconic picture by mile marker zero as well. Some fun things to do are walk from one end of the island to the other, going in and out of the many shops. You will also see many bars and restaurants along the way. We had fun stopping at the historic lighthouse and Hemingway’s House. Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park is another great option with a splash pad and numerous things to do. A day trip to Tortuga National Park is popular; however, you must book months in advance (a perfect reason to use a travel agent)!
At night the streets of Duval get even busier with people bar hopping and having a blast with the live music and entertainment at each place. A fun nighttime activity is doing the Haunted Ghost Tours. The tour guide was hilarious but also had many eerie stories to tell us about. I highly recommend this tour. Cemeteries in Key West are raised like in New Orleans.
Irish Kevins, located on Duval Street, is a bar/restaurant with LIVE entertainment daily from morning to closing. This bar has twenty-six beers on tap and is known for its Reuben Sandwich. Their menu definitely has something for everyone from salads to burgers and everything in between!
Jimmy Buffet Margaritaville, located on Duval Street, has happy hour Monday-Friday. Take a bite out of Paradise! Known for that Cheeseburger in Paradise of course and margaritas! It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere! LIVE entertainment can be found here and a schedule is posted on their website!
Sloppy Joe’s, a hangout of Ernest Hemingway, located on the corner of Duval and Greene Street, is quite a happening place too. LIVE entertainment with a WEBCAM to watch from anywhere you may be located. This American/Caribbean bar and menu will not disappoint! Sloppy Joe’s offers Papa look-alike contests (look like Hemingway) and other fun events. You can go on their webpage to see what is happening each day for the year! Don’t forget after eating to check out their store for souvenirs.
Opal Key Resort and Marina (formerly known as Jimmy Buffet Margaritaville), located in Old Key West surrounded by water with boats and yachts, this is an amazing luxury resort that has a pool and three restaurants. My favorite was the Sunset deck and Bistro 245. Several amazing stores and a cute coffee shop are all on the premises. Located near Mallory Square, where there is nightly entertainment from juggling to painting to singing and so much more. This place has standard rooms and also has two-bedroom suites to accommodate larger families.
Southermost Beach Resort, located in the Historic Old Town, offers a beach area away from the hustle and bustle of Duval Street. This is considered a modern luxury resort. Lush tropical areas and some sandy areas. This is not far from the iconic place for photo ops with the marker of Southernmost Point. This resort offers a Beach Café, Pineapple Bar, and Shores Bar. It also has a spa for those who like to relax and enjoy a spa day!
