Mother Daughter NYC Trip

For Christmas, one of my daughter’s gifts was a trip to New York City with yours truly!  I hadn’t been to New York since college, she’s always wanted to go, and well, travel makes the perfect gift!!  We had to postpone our original dates (MLK weekend) because of the uptick in Covid cases, but luckily, we were able to reschedule for Presidents Day weekend in February.

We had the BEST trip ever!  Our hotel was in a great location near Times Square so that was our first stop.  We decided the easiest way to get an overview of all the sights was a hop on, hop off bus tour.  We plugged in to hear our guide, and Alicia Keys was belting out Empire State of Mind.  So iconic!

Now you’re in New York!

These streets will make you feel brand new.

Big lights will inspire you.

Hear it for New York, New York, New York!

We hopped off at Macy’s Herald Square, America’s largest department store.  It covers an entire city block!  We took a few pictures as it started to snow (it felt like Christmas) and then went on to find a prom dress, our own little miracle on 34th Street!  That night we had an unforgettable, literally freezing night tour of the city.  Note to self – check the weather before hopping on the open-air upper deck of a tour bus.

On our second day in the city, we navigated the subway and visited the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.  This is a must-do.  I was last in New York in the late 90s and have a picture with the Twin Towers in the background.  It’s crazy to think my daughter (who’s 16) has only learned about what happened as part of history.  That night, we had tickets for Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway.  I’d read the book and seen the movie, but nothing compares to seeing the musical live on stage.  It was an amazing show, and we were both in tears.  We were lucky to see Disney channel star Jordan Fisher in his final performance!

The weather was sunny and beautiful for our third day!  We took a fun pedicab tour of Central Park with our driver Jafar, not to be confused with the Lion King villain.  Jafar pointed out all the famous landmarks as he pedaled us through the park.  From there, we did lots of walking and explored Greenwich Village, snapping pictures at the Friends apartment building and Carrie Bradshaw’s brownstone.  We also made stops at Rockefeller Center and FAO Schwartz, where I had Molly reenact the piano scene from the movie Big.  The most thrilling moment of the day came as we ran into TMZ at the NBC building and waited with the crowd to catch a glimpse of Tom Holland.  No such luck.  It took us some time to get over that, but we ended the night at the top of the Empire State building so that helped make up for it.

Our last day was spent doing what else, more sightseeing!  We visited Battery Park and took a cruise to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.  We were able to go up to the statue’s pedestal (the crown is closed).  Both neat experiences.  That night we saw our first Broadway play, Harry Potter & the Cursed Child… yes, we are Potterheads!  The play was 3 ½ hours long so not recommended for children under 10.  It was super cool though with lots of magic touches!

We tried to fit in as much as we could in the time we had… I think we hit most of the big tourist spots.  I’m so thankful my daughter and I had this time together making memories in the Big Apple!  Just another reminder to take the trip because travel makes life sweeter!
