When packing for a family getaway, parents need to be as organized and proactive as possible in planning for any type of situations with kids. From boredom to sickness to hunger, sometimes children can be unpredictable and us parents need to be ready to meet their various needs!
Here’s a quick guide to being prepared in your packing for a getaway with kids! From toddlers to teens, this list has got what you need. Let’s start with carrying some tiny basics that you need to be able to find readily!
Packing small things like a thermometer, Q tips, diaper rash cream can leave us all over the place. Here is why we need a small zip bag that’s durable and wipe clean friendly. Check out Wildkin Kids’ 3 Piece Zippered Organizer. It’s got multiple compartments and is available in various patterns, perfect for a variety of age groups. Don’t forget to pack hair clips and a hairbrush!
If you’re traveling via plane, car or cruise, your little ones may encounter motion sickness. So, reach for that Wildkin zip up bag and administer the Chewable Dramamine – it’s dye free! I pack these as my daughter gets motion sickness even on a car ride to see her grandparents locally! A total necessity, maybe even for adults! Please seek the advice of a medical professional about the appropriate dose of medication for your child.
Another must-have in your toiletry bag is a thermometer. It’s especially handy when all you have to do is roll it against their forehead. The iHealth No-Touch Forehead Thermometer does just that. Take anyone’s temperature if you suspect they have a fever.
If you’ve got a child that adores the sand, this toy is for them. Fikokuku makes silicone beach toys that are so durable and easy to wash or rinse after use. They come in a few choice colors and fold up nicely so they don’t take up bulky space in your packing. These are a total must for beach-loving kids!
One of the things I used to dread as a potty-training mother was keeping my child clean and away from the germs of public toilets. I also carried multiple packs of flushable toilet seat covers. These seat covers are even safe for camping and airplane restrooms to be flushed. They’re wide to cover standard toilet seats so your child stays safe from the germs.
In also preparing to face the elements (forecasted or not), having disposable ponchos ready to go never hurt anybody! One too many times in the past in our travels to Orlando and other locations we have been unprepared for rain showers and it makes for an uncomfortable scene. Lingito Family Pack of Rain Ponchos has got you covered in a compact set for everyone in your group. Lightweight and ready to use, don’t get caught in the rain again without a covering!
What do you do with swimsuits after a day at the beach? Whether you’re washing them or letting them air dry before placing them in your hamper, you’ll need a place to hang them. A portable hanging clothesline is just what we need to do so! It folds compact, takes up minimal space when folded up and can also be used to air dry any form of light clothing on your shower curtain rod.
If your tweens and teens need organization for deodorant, brushes, cosmetics, etc., how about this cute set from Ban.do! Carry all their needs and toiletries in these trendy zip-up bags! The colors are so beachy! A total steal at this price of just under $22.00 for four different shaped bags!
If your kids are like my kids, they’re always snacking and saying they are hungry. Let’s pack some healthier type of treats while we are away from home! Gogo Applesauce pouches, Smart Sweets low sugar candies, and small compartment bento boxes for anything you want to pack from your fridge like mini carrots, a cut up sandwich, etc., will keep it all organized for you and your famished travelers.
Now that we have satisfied their hunger, they will probably look for things to do while we navigate to where we are headed! Let’s cure their boredom before it starts, shall we? Mattel makes a really nifty Emoji Uno Card Game they can play with their parents or siblings, and a Star Wars Mad Libs is always a great idea to keep them entertained.
If you have avid mature readers on your travels, consider “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens” as a great read, or if they’re younger, encourage writing habits with a “Kid’s Travel Journal”! And for the tiniest of travelers, maybe first time on a plane, I recommend the book, “My First Airplane Trip” which is a story of a child and their experience flying for the first time, which may ease any anxieties of flying and help them to anticipate what’s to come.
Some other fabulous necessities worth mentioning – the Montessori Toy: Busy Book for Kids, a 12-page binder full of activities, or the Crayola Washable Dry Erase Travel Pack. And don’t forget our kids on their devices who will need a back up battery: TG90’s Power Bank External Battery Pack Portable Charger!
No matter your destination, packing for kids doesn’t have to be overwhelming! Being prepared and organized is the key to a calm and enjoyable vacation with your children, no matter their age!
