If there is anything we have learned in 2020, it is that just because you have a plan doesn’t mean it is going to happen. Hence the phrase: Plan in Pencil.
Do I actually mean for you to use a pencil to plan? No – but after this past year, your calendar may appreciate your ability to erase over angrily scratching out plans.
Plan in Pencil simply means plan in such a way that if you need to cancel a trip or if it gets canceled on you, you are able to easily be refunded or credited for a trip on a later date.
I’ll be honest, before 2020 I had never purchased travel insurance. I didn’t see the point because I never had a doubt in my mind that I wouldn’t go on the trip. Now though, as travelers, it is sometimes out of our control whether or not we are able to go on our planned trip. I’ve also learned that travel insurance goes well beyond simply covering your trip cost. Did you know that some insurances will even pay for an additional night of boarding for your dog should your trip be delayed? Being that my only child has fur and 4 paws, this is huge!
Going beyond travel insurance, planning in pencil also means to have a back-up plan (or two). Back in August, I helped a honeymoon couple plan a trip to Hawaii for March 2021. As of December 2020, the islands were still requiring Covid testing to island hop, and Kauai was requiring an extended quarantine upon arrival, thus, making their romantic getaway a bit tricky. So, we decided to book a fully refundable Plan B option to Cancun as well! This way, no matter what, they know they will have a honeymoon to look forward to and not have to worry about the details/steps to cancel the untraveled trip as I’ll take care of it for them.
Post-pandemic travel is happening. When or where you end up going may change, but I’ll take any destination over the same four walls I’ve been staring at this past year!
