I LOVE to read! I was that kid growing up that always had a book… in the car, at the dinner table, in the bathroom, lol – wherever! Some of my favorite books growing up were The Babysitters Club and Sweet Valley High. I must’ve never finished the SVH series though because I had no idea Todd and Jessica end up married and having a son, Jake. Say what?!
My oldest two kiddos were big readers like me, but it’s honestly more of a chore for my younger two. The good news is if they find a book they really like, it’s hard for them to put it down! I’m always adding to my personal “to-read” list and trying to find books that my kids will like and be excited about reading.
One series that we all love is Harry Potter. My oldest son (who’s now 20) was the first to read the series when he was in elementary school. I wasn’t interested at the time… books about a kid wizard sounded good for him but definitely not my cup of tea. But when my daughter was in fourth grade, we started reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone together at bedtime. I think I was hooked after chapter one!
For me, reading and travel go hand-in-hand.
“There’s always room for a story that can transport people to another place.” – J.K. Rowling
That’s exactly how I feel! Reading can transport you to another time, another place. I love getting lost in a good book. And I like books from all kinds of genres – historical fiction, literary fiction, young adult (apocalyptic and dystopian), suspense & thrillers, and more.
When you’re actually traveling, reading can be a great way to pass the time on a drive or flight. I love to relax on vacation by reading by the pool or at the beach. Reading is also a great way for kids to get excited about a trip. You can find books that highlight the places you’re visiting and/or experiences you plan to enjoy.
Heading to Universal? The Harry Potter series is a no-brainer. Planning a trip to Walt Disney World? The Kingdom Keepers is a great series that is based at WDW. My kiddos all enjoyed the Magic Tree House series where Jack & Annie travel in time visiting places like Hawaii, Australia, Japan, and more. The Where is/Who is books for kids are great non-fiction books for learning about people & places.
So before you head out on your next trip, make sure to stop by your local library or download books for you and your family to enjoy! Reading can keep kids busy on a drive or flight and maybe even help you to keep your sanity. 😉 Like I mentioned earlier, I’m always adding to my “to-read” list so I’d love for you to share your favorites!
