runDisney Princess Weekend 2022

The Disney Princess Weekend is one of several Disney-sponsored running events.  The Princess Weekend typically takes place over the last weekend in February and consists of a 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon.  If you complete the 10K and Half Marathon, you can also qualify for the Disney Fairy Tale Challenge medal.

Next year, the weekend is set for February 24-27, 2022.  The event is so popular it typically sells out during the first 48 hours of the registration window.  Many people bring their families on this weekend to make it a long weekend trip and a celebration for the family and friends who are running.  I typically make it a gal’s weekend and bring several ladies who run with me and others who come along as our cheerleaders!  I would consider the 5K a fun race, and the 10K and Half Marathon to be a little more competitive with a lot less walking.  The current time limit you must maintain is 16 minutes per mile for you to not be swept off by the sweet balloon ladies.

Registration

Registration for this weekend event opens on Tuesday, August 24, 2021.  The window for registering opens at 10:00 am. (Disney time of course!)

If you are ever interested in participating in one of these running weekends, you should be prepared to log in to your MDE account the moment the window opens to guarantee your spot.  You can register for multiple runners after you log on; be prepared with their names, addresses, birthdates, and credit card numbers to make the process smoother.

runDisney Health and Fitness Expo

RunDisney, along with sponsors, will operate the Health and Fitness Expo at the ESPN sports area prior to the races.  In order for participants to pick up their bib numbers, they must arrive the day prior to their race and present an official ID.  There are NO bib pick ups the day of the races, and NO pick ups allowed for other runners.  Disney is very strict about this policy.  The Health and Fitness Expo typically runs from 10:00 am – 7:00 pm.

Race Day

Race day is filled with excitement and lots and lots of costumes!  The times I’ve run the Half Marathon, I’ve noticed a huge majority of runners dress up for the race.

Be prepared to leave EARLY in the morning to gather for the start of the race.  Disney provides buses (maps provided) to pick up participants, and the buses will also return participants to their resort when finished.  The buses do not run to off-property resorts and hotels.  They begin running buses at about 3:30 am because they want everyone positioned in their corral by 5:30 am or earlier.  Disney’s goal is for the races to begin at 5:30 am and be completed by the time the parks open.  The Half Marathon is a longer race so the race occurs in parks that do not open early.

What if you don’t finish?  The happy balloon ladies will escort you off the course and will take you to the finish line to have you checked out and also allow you space to wait for friends and family.

Race Course

Along the race course, I found more water and Powerade than I could possibly drink.  They also offer small boosts of energy snacks such as Cliff bars and GU.  Plenty of bathroom stops are provided if needed, and there are many medical tents set up if you have an injury or need a band-aid or dab of medical ointment.  I always felt very safe and cared for during the race.  At the finish line, you are greeted with a food box and more water and Powerade to drink!  (Of course, you receive your medal as well!)
